Many books are recorded and proposed as audiobooks. To listen to them revives an old custom of the humankind , and one of the oldest approach to learn and transmit instruction : story telling ; but it may also be added to the language learning tools .
A novel is meant neither to be easy nor to be difficult. The narrator tells a story . The story itself may be complex , with innumerable characters who live mingled adventures , but its writing may be quite linear, without words of more than three syllables . On the other hand, a very uncomplicated story that involves no more than two characters may use flashbacks, rare turns of phrases, and obscure words .
To those factual points of gradation , the most significant one , that is 100% subjective has still to be added: the reader’s penchant . If a reader does not enjoy detective stories, for instance, he will find difficult to read/listen to one, even if its writing is easily accessible .
For bilingual books, the level of difficultness is commonly ascertained in accordance with the linguistics of the targeted language. If the linguistic level is high, the novel will be said for “Advanced” or “Experts.” The genre, for example, is hardly ever considered , though it is the principal criterion for the readers. It is not rare that the readership be confused and bilingual books for children seldom have their dedicated shelf .
Now that bilingual audiobooks are added to the supply of language learning means , the learner has to know how they are ranked . Bilingual audiobooks are not judged on linguistics only. The audio part has to be taken into account .
Let’s consider a beginner . His audio book will have the features he needs to learn from the very beginning . For example, he will listen to his own language first, to be able to understand what he will hear then . The sentences will be short . Those that are too long will be cut in several phrases .
On the contrary, if we consider an advanced student , he may find that it is enough to get no more than a summary in his own language , while the intermediate student will most certainly opt to listen to the targeted language first and try to translate by himself what he hears before checking his knowledge by listening to the translation .
Of course , since there are levels within the levels , bilingual audiobooks cannot follow a mathematical equation . A student may say he is a beginner because he has not learned how to question yet, but the student who does not know how to say “ thank you ” or “ please ” will think that the first one is at an intermediate level.
In order to learn a foreign language, it would be wise for the student to aim at a level slightly higher than his, without going for the stars .
The advanced student should make the language he is fluent in his “source language” to learn another one. If someone speaks Spanish and wishes to speak French, to choose a French-Spanish bilingual audiobook will help him to go on preserving his understanding of vocal Spanish -and ameliorating his Spanish pronunciation as well- while beginning to learn French.
With the world going as it goes , to increase one’s chances of finding a good job cannot hurt . To multiply opportunities without effort is what makes bilingual audio books the best language learning method .
